This Week In Buzz

Buzz,
We've had another busy week with Internationals and Lamma Small Boat race in quick succession. But looking forward we have another race coming up this weekend at TKO, and we'll be having an Open Day in a couple of weeks too.
Internationals
A week ago we arrived at the TST promenade raring to go against all that Hong Kong has to offer at the Hong Kong Internationals. We entered a mixed boat, men's boat, and ladies' boat.
Early on Saturday we had the mixed and men racing, and while they weren't able to make it into the Sunday draw, they can be proud of their efforts on the day. For those that didn't hear, we had a strangest of situations go against us. It's story time!
We had the ladies' first heat, and immediately after that was the mixed semi-final. But the rules state you aren't allowed a back-to-back on the Saturday... What transpired was about an hour of arguing with the race officials, and in the end they said they'd wait for the ladies as long as possible. So 6 of the ladies were literally sprinting from the finish line of their heat to the marshalling area for the next race, but alas they just wouldn't wait any longer and we weren't able to race the mixed semi-final after all. Ah well, "c'est la vie" as the french would say, or "shit happens" if you're less cultured like me!
The weekend took a huge turn for the better though with the ladies' performance - their heat was excellent and they qualified for Sunday racing!
On Sunday the ladies paddled amazingly, getting into the International Silver Cup. They came 3rd in a nail biting finish, getting onto the podium at internationals. Well-deserved celebrations ensued - well done ladies!
Lamma Small Boat
Just three days after internationals, we ventured out to Lamma to participate in the small boat race at Sok Kwu Wan. It proved to be a blisteringly hot day, but a fun day racing for everyone.
We entered two mixed boats. Buzz Green achieved 5th place in the Gold Cup - well done all. Buzz Yellow had a super run and hit the podium in 3rd place in the Diamond Cup - another great result! MVPs for the day were Merissa and Carson, congrats!
Dinner afterwards was super delicious (and now I know where to take my wife for our anniversary dinner). It was a great day of racing together, thanks all!

We still have some races to come, the soonest one being TKO this Sunday! There's also Tai O which is probably my favourite race of the year, Kwun Tong, and lastly Shau Kei Wan later in the year.

Open Day
Buzz will be running a number of open days throughout the rest of the year, starting with one on 19th July in a couple of weeks.
For us, it's a chance to welcome new people to the team, and a chance to train out at DWB again. Please sign up if you can - it makes such a difference to new people to mix in with us experienced paddlers when joining a new team, and you can help welcome your new team mates too!

Goodbye to Good Friends
The races this past week marked the last races before three good friends and paddlers leave our shores.
Lelan is moving to the US to pursue his Masters, Christophe is moving to Panama for work, and Kat is starting her higher education in Canada. It's always sad to see friends go, but we wish you all the best of success! Keep in touch, and we look forward to seeing you when you're back in HK next!
